Düsseldorf City's AWO performs voluntary checks on Bundestag candidates
In a bid to understand the needs of the community beyond political debates, politicians from SPD, FDP, and Die Linke visited the AWO-Aktiv and Community Center in Wersten, a neighborhood not privileged in Düsseldorf, on Thursday, February 13th. The center, accepted as an "extended living room" of the neighborhood, offers various activities such as gymnastics, crafting, play offerings, a bike workshop, and an animal farm.
Christine Rachner, representing FDP candidates, called for more intensive support by companies for foreign workers to facilitate integration. During her visit, she replaced the FDP candidates Moritz Kracht and Lida Azarnoosh. Rachner was seen crafting masks with some girls at the community center.
Zanda Marten, running for office in the northern part of Düsseldorf, visited the bicycle workshop at the community center. Volunteers refurbish donated bicycles for new owners in this workshop. Marten aiming to win this constituency, was also seen helping sort donated baby clothes in the clothing store.
Adis Selimi, a politician running for SPD, sees a solution to the severe skilled worker shortage in nursing, kindergartens, and OGS in reduced hurdles for qualification recognition. Selimi spent time at the animal farm in the community center, where children from the neighborhood care for donkeys, ponies, rabbits, chickens, cats, goats, and guinea pigs.
The identity of four female politicians who participated in the event remains unclear from the available information. Further details about meeting Düsseldorf candidates for the federal election in person can be found at a specified location.
The community center, with its reliance on volunteers for activities like running the animal farm on weekends, was well-attended on the day of the visit. The center's offerings, aimed at providing a welcoming space for all, continue to be a vital part of the community in Wersten.
