Düsseldorf initiates efforts to counteract the rampant tree-cutting within the city
In the heart of Germany, the city of Düsseldorf has announced plans to enhance its urban landscape by planting 1,500 new trees in the upcoming 2024/25 planting season. This initiative is part of the city's comprehensive "City Tree Concept," aimed at maintaining and enhancing the city's tree population.
Residents can trace the locations of these new street trees using the Düsseldorf Maps application, under the category Nature and Leisure-Tree Stock-City Tree Concept. The plantings will include 210 replacement plantings of street trees and an additional 150 trees as part of construction projects.
The plan also includes the planting of 75 shade trees on playgrounds, 70 trees on cemeteries, and 100 in sports facilities. Moreover, 225 trees will be planted on private properties as part of the "Your Tree" action. In green spaces, 230 trees are planned for planting.
In a significant move, the city also plans to plant 20,000 new saplings in the city forest. This ambitious target will contribute to the overall greening of the city and provide a haven for wildlife.
However, it's important to note that not every site where a tree has been felled can be replanted again. The city has not disclosed the reasons for felling the trees, but it's clear that most of the trees felled this year were large and old. Out of the 1,778 trees felled in 2024, 109 were felled on November 25, with 49 being on streets and 60 in green spaces.
Residents will be directly informed about new tree plantings through city information letters. The city encourages everyone to stay informed and get involved in the city's greening initiatives.
While the city has not disclosed the species of the trees, the planting of such a large number is a positive step towards a greener and more sustainable city. The city's "City Tree Concept" is a testament to its commitment to preserving and enhancing its urban forest for future generations.
