Düsseldorf mulls over organizing a citywide drone display or fireworks spectacular for New Year's Eve celebrations.

In a meeting held on February 6, the Düsseldorf City Council discussed the upcoming New Year's Eve celebrations. One of the key topics under consideration is the possibility of a central drone or fireworks show in the old town.

Last New Year's Eve was described as relatively calm by the police and law enforcement. However, the situation on Burgplatz was reported to be very tense, with people finding it fun to circumvent the fireworks ban and setting off firecrackers everywhere. Despite the ban zone, little was noticeable in enforcing it, and hundreds of fireworks were confiscated and destroyed.

The CDU and BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN faction submitted a motion for a central show, arguing that it could attract a diverse audience to the old town, similar to the fireworks display at the Japan Day. A central show could potentially strengthen the city's appeal and boost tourism.

If a central show is organised, the administration plans to enforce the firecracker ban more strictly in the old town area. The administration is also preparing, within the framework of a possible central show, an extension of the firecracker ban in the old town area.

Potential organisers are to discuss possible concepts and coordinate with multiple entities, including the police, fire department, air traffic control, the old town community, fairground operators, and D.LIVE. Sponsors are also to be found for the potential central show.

It is worth noting that a central drone show was previously discussed in 2021 but was rejected. The renewed examination of the possibility for a central drone show or fireworks on New Year's Day in Düsseldorf's old town is planned, but no specific date has yet been announced. The topic is discussed for future event planning considerations linked to ensuring a safe and peaceful New Year's celebration in the old town.

In the past, some rockets were lit by hand on Burgplatz, indicating the need for stricter control over such events. The administration aims to ensure a balanced approach between safety and celebration, making the New Year's Eve celebrations in Düsseldorf's old town a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.
