BV 04's International Easter Tournament Cancelled for 2023

After a long-standing tradition of 61 editions, the International Easter Tournament, held annually at the BV 04 facility on Hans-Böckler-Straße, has been cancelled this year due to economic challenges faced by the organisers.

The tournament, which has seen the participation of international and national teams, including a Japanese university team and Sydney FC, as well as German teams such as Fortuna Düsseldorf, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and a BV 04 team, has been a significant part of youth football development.

In recent years, the tournament has been organised by Martin Meyer, Piet Keusen, Marcus Giesenfeld, and BV 04, with the trio and the club taking on the responsibility for the past ten years. They had initially planned to conclude their involvement after ten years, with the 60th tournament.

However, Bodo Grimm, the 1st chairman of BV 04, who was initially optimistic about the BV04 Easter tournament taking place in 2023, now considers the cancellation a difficult but inevitable decision. The challenge is to stabilise the tournament's financing through marketing and attracting new sponsors.

The club aims to secure the Easter tournament in the long term and establish it as a significant part of youth football development. The focus is on stabilising the financing of the BV04 Easter tournament through marketing and attracting new sponsors.

Despite the cancellation this year, there is hope for a revival of the BV04 Easter tournament in 2026. High-caliber European teams were also part of the tournament, making it a much-anticipated event in the football calendar. The U19 Champions Trophy was scheduled to take place over the Easter weekend.

The organisers had intended to pass the responsibility back to BV 04 after their involvement, with the goal of establishing the tournament as a lasting part of the club's history and football development. However, the current search results do not contain specific information about the new sponsors that BV 04 has secured for the financing and preservation of the Easter tournament in 2025 and beyond.

The cancellation of the tournament this year is a blow to the football community, but the spirit of the International Easter Tournament at BV 04 lives on, with the club determined to bring it back stronger than ever in 2026.
