Düsseldorf's Fortuna secures a draw against Cologne in their derby match, ending 1-1.
In a closely contested derby match, Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Cologne ended in a 1-1 draw. The game was characterized by a lack of chances throughout the second half, with Cologne remaining in control for most of the period.
The first half was dominated by Cologne, who started offensively, while Fortuna Düsseldorf remained passive. Despite being on the defensive, Fortuna Düsseldorf managed to keep Cologne from scoring, with goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier making several saves. The half-time score remained 0-0.
Coach Daniel Thioune made changes to Fortuna Düsseldorf's starting lineup for the derby, with Shinta Appelkamp and Dzenan Pejcinovic starting instead of Jona Niemiec and Moritz-Broni Kwarteng, who was substituted onto the bench.
Cologne scored the first goal of the match in the 67th minute, with Linton Maina providing the assist and Markus Kainz finishing. Fortuna Düsseldorf responded just before the end of the game, when they were awarded a penalty due to a handball by Timo Hübners. Jonas Jóhannesson converted the penalty to equalize for Fortuna Düsseldorf.
In the second half, Thioune made further substitutions, bringing on Niemiec, Vincent Vermeij, and Andre Hoffmann. Fortuna Düsseldorf gained more offensive control after the changes, with Vermeij hitting the crossbar from a Valgeir Lunddal cross in the 84th minute.
The final score of the derby match remained 1-1, with neither team able to find a winner in extra time. Fortuna Düsseldorf's next 2. Bundesliga game is at home against Greuther Fürth on February 28th at 6:30 PM.
