Dutch gas company, Thyssengas, initiates construction on hydrogen pipeline linking Netherlands to Germany.

In a significant step towards a greener future, German gas transmission operator Thyssengas has commenced work on a hydrogen pipeline project connecting Hoogstede, Netherlands, and Ochtrup in Münsterland, Germany.

The project, which is part of the development of a country-wide hydrogen infrastructure in both countries, involves the conversion of a 52km natural gas pipeline between Vlieghuis in the Netherlands and Ochtrup in Münsterland. This conversion includes contaminant removal, replacements of valve and compressor components, and the pipeline system is expected to be fully hydrogen compliant by 2027.

Thyssengas, which operates around 4,440km of natural gas pipelines, mainly in North Rhine-Westphalia, is leading the hydrogen pipeline project. In May, there were announcements of potential collaboration with other companies to explore the development of a hydrogen pipeline network connecting the UK and Germany. However, the specific company involved in this cross-border project has not been explicitly named.

The Federal Network Agency approved the hydrogen core network in October 2024, marking the start of development of a country-wide hydrogen infrastructure. The cost for the Thyssengas project was not disclosed, but a similar 90km pipeline conversion involving Engie and Creos in France and Germany was costed at €40m and €70m.

This cross-border hydrogen pipeline project is a significant stride in the transition towards a sustainable energy system. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change, initiatives like these demonstrate the commitment of companies and nations to a greener future.
