With inflation reaching 40-year highs, the holiday shopping season is shaping up to be a unique one, as major retailers like Target, Walmart, and Amazon bring their deals earlier than ever before.

According to a statement from Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst for Bankrate.com, consumers are still spending during the holiday season, but they are being especially thoughtful about where each dollar goes. Inflation may impact the shopping decisions of 40% of consumers during this period.

Target has kicked off its holiday shopping season three weeks earlier than last year, with its first holiday event, Target Deal Days, taking place in the first week of October. The retail giant has also launched a holiday price-matching guarantee, which runs from October 6th through December 24th. This guarantee is available in-store, online, or through the Target app.

The weeklong Black Friday Deals are running now through November 26th, and a new batch of promotions debut each Sunday through Thanksgiving weekend. These specials feature hundreds more items than last year, all at Black Friday pricing. Deal of the Day specials run through December 24th.

Target's early holiday savings strategy is not unique. Walmart is introducing its "Rollbacks and More" savings event from October 10th to October 13th. Kohl's has launched savings starting October 6th.

Amazon, too, has joined the early holiday sales trend, conducting its first Christmas sales campaign in October, ahead of other major retailers starting their gift and special promotions.

AlixPartners conducted research on consumer plans for holiday shopping, and their findings suggest that 46% of consumers plan to start holiday shopping before Halloween, a decrease from last year. The shape of the holiday season will likely look different this year due to early discounting, according to a statement from Patrick Brown. This potential pullback on spending growth during cyber week may indicate that early October deals are pulling up spend that would have occurred around that time.

Despite these changes, the holiday season is expected to be busy for retailers, with consumers still eager to find deals and make their holiday purchases. As always, it's essential to stay informed and plan ahead to make the most of the season's sales and promotions.
