East German resident Christine Schlegel sought to depart from the GDR, only to find herself unwillingly involved in a post-Berlin Wall film production.
Christine Schlegel, a painter and filmmaker born in 1950, has been a marginal figure in recent German art history. However, her unique and enigmatic works are now gaining recognition, with exhibitions and displays scheduled in various locations.
Schlegel's artistic journey began at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in the 1970s. After moving four times, she settled in Dresden-Hosterwitz in 2000, renovating a dilapidated garden house. It was here that she created her metaphorical painting "Death of a Clowness," which was later bought by the Albertinum in Dresden.
Schlegel's paintings are characterized by figures, things, and scenes with no rational explanation. They often reflect memories of her travels, such as Mexico and Italy, and she allows her painting to be called surreal, describing them as "hallucinations" and "premonitions." She sees Piero della Francesca and Giotto as the first surrealists in art history, having made this observation during her first trip to Italy.
Currently, Schlegel's works can be seen in the Municipal Art Collections Dresden. Meanwhile, her paintings are on display at the Galerie Mutare in Berlin until 4 October. A retrospective of her work will take place in the Brandenburg Art Collections Cottbus in 2024/25.
Schlegel's career took an interesting turn when she left the GDR after A.R. Penck was expelled in 1980. She later moved to West Berlin, where she felt at home with other "expelled" ones. In the past, she has collaborated with Penck, creating art that reflected their feelings. Her paper works were also acquired for the graphic cabinet.
Despite being a marginal figure, Schlegel's works are a testament to her unique artistic vision. As we look forward to the upcoming exhibitions, it's clear that her enigmatic paintings will continue to intrigue and inspire.
