Eddie completes Vuelta a España stage 15 in fifth position, Eddy Dunbar maintains a top-five ranking
In the 15th stage of the Vuelta a España, Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek claimed a thrilling victory, finishing first in a sprint among a group of nine escapees in Monforte de Lemos. Ireland's Eddie Dunbar from Team Jayco AlUla finished fifth.
The stage, spanning 167.8km from Vegadeo, saw seven riders break away in the last 30km, catching Jay Vine and Tim Vervaeke in the last seven kilometres. Vine made an early attack on the 16.5km category-one climb to Puerto de la Garganta, but was overtaken at the summit.
Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard retained the red jersey for the overall lead, finishing 13 minutes and 31 seconds behind Pedersen. Vingegaard did not attempt a challenge on the leaders during the stage, with no reaction from the GC leaders.
Julien Bernard and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier led a chasing group, reducing their gap with the leaders to around two minutes and 20 seconds. Javier Romo, who suffered a crash earlier, returned to the chasing group within five minutes.
In the general classification, Eddie Dunbar currently holds the 25th position. João Almeida and Tom Pidcock were among Vingegaard's rivals in the 15th stage. Orluis Aular (Movistar) and Marco Frigo (Israel Premier Tech) came in second and third respectively.
The stage was not without incident, as a man with a Palestinian flag attempted to run up to the riders, causing a brief disturbance. Thankfully, the race resumed without further incident.
With six stages remaining in the Vuelta a España, Pedersen went 98 points ahead of Vingegaard in the race for the green sprinters jersey. Pedersen's victory in the 15th stage also saw him join an attack from the chasing group going into the last 30km of the stage.
Dunbar was involved in the sprint finish of the stage, demonstrating his strong performance despite the challenging terrain. The Irish rider will undoubtedly be a force to reckon with in the remaining stages of the Vuelta a España.
