Edmonton Elks Suffer Defensive Battle Loss Against Calgary Stampeders

The Edmonton Elks faced a tough challenge against the Calgary Stampeders in the Labour Day Rematch, ultimately losing 28-7. The game was characterized by a defensive battle, with both teams struggling on offence.

Injuries played a significant role in the Elks' performance, as offensive lineman Kyle Saxelid and Jon Ryan were unable to participate due to injuries. Starting quarterback Cody Fajardo connected 64 percent of his throws for 255 yards, a lower completion rate than usual, due to constant pressure and potential lack of familiarity with receivers.

The Elks did not utilize their "thunder and lightning" combo of Javon Leake and Trevor Harris in their offense. Instead, Arkell Smith led the team with seven catches for 81 yards, 53 of which were yards after the catch.

Calgary's defensive line was particularly effective, causing Fajardo to be sacked only four times but requiring frequent picks up off the turf. Tre Ford, who could have provided a threat with his running abilities, was not used in the game, despite Calgary putting a spy on the QB position to keep Fajardo from running.

Injuries continued to affect Edmonton, with Nyles Morgan limping off in the fourth quarter and defensive tackle Jake Ceresna going down with a knee injury in the second quarter. Head coach Mark Kilam stated that the offensive line needs to improve, and that simplification may be necessary if they can't figure it out.

Jared Brinkman, who was a game-time decision with a shoulder injury, played and had a lot of push up the middle. An early Calgary touchdown had Edmonton worried, but they held the Stampeders to three field goals for the rest of the first half. Calgary had 7 tackles for loss or sacks, while Edmonton did not capitalize on their pressures.

The Elks' receiving corps is currently composed of Kurleigh Gittens Jr., Kaion Julien-Grant, Arkell Smith, Binjimen Victor, Tyson Middlemost, and newcomer OJ Hiliare. Jake Julien, who returned from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to join the Elks as a punter, set a new CFL record for punting average in a season last year at 54 yards.

Erik Brooks scored an 86-yard punt return touchdown against the Elks, adding to their offensive woes. The Elks and Calgary Stampeders will meet again in Edmonton on Saturday.
