Nikolaus "Niki" Glattauer, a distinguished figure in both journalism and education, has passed away at the age of 66. The news of his passing was confirmed by the Austrian Press Agency (APA) on Thursday morning.

Born in Zurich on January 1, 1959, Glattauer began his career as a journalist, serving as deputy editor-in-chief of News. He later moved into the education sector, teaching in main schools, special education, and eventually serving as a school director.

Glattauer was also a prolific writer, penning several books on education, including "The Engaged Teacher and His Enemies." In addition to his literary works, he worked as a columnist on educational issues for eight years, including for our website.

Known for his sharp and often humorous critiques of the education system, Glattauer emphasized the importance of socialization, communication, empathy, and talent exploration in his columns. He believed that school hours and schedules should be more flexible to accommodate the realities of parents' lives.

In an interview published on Tuesday, Glattauer revealed his battle with a serious illness and his decision to end his life through assisted suicide, which he carried out on Thursday morning.

Glattauer is survived by his brother, bestselling author Daniel Glattauer, who also wrote about "school and the rest of life" for the same outlet. The last interview recording of Niki Glattauer was published by the magazine Falter and the platform Newsflix (Heute Verlag).

Niki Glattauer will be remembered not only for his contributions to journalism and education but also for his groundbreaking work. He is credited with establishing the term "Ötzi" for the Austrian-Italian glacier mummy.

Our thoughts are with the Glattauer family during this difficult time.
