Effective Utilization of Satellite Communication in Firefighting Pursuits

Baden-Württemberg, a German state, has made a significant investment in a satellite-supported radio system for its fire departments. This move aims to ensure secure communication, especially during extreme crises.

The new system, known as "SaFe" (Satellite Radio Fire Department), will provide a reliable means of communication when fire departments cannot access the digital radio network. This could be the case when deploying abroad or when foreign fire departments are in Baden-Württemberg.

The system, designed to meet the highest security requirements, can continue communication even in the unlikely event of a digital radio disruption. It does not require additional ground infrastructure for operation, only a connection of the antenna to a satellite. The transmitted information is encrypted throughout the entire transport path to prevent unauthorized interception.

Thomas Strobl, the Deputy Minister-President and Interior Minister, highlighted the importance of secure communication in crisis situations. He emphasized that the system can provide relief to the digital radio network when it is heavily loaded and can function during prolonged, nationwide power outages.

Baden-Württemberg has acquired 52 permanently building-installed radio devices and 190 portable satellite handheld radio devices for the system. The city and district administrations, government presidencies, and the Ministry of the Interior will be equipped with the SaFe system.

However, the company supplying the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior with the "K-Funk" satellite-based radio communication system for the fire department is not explicitly mentioned in the available search results.

The goal of this investment is to ensure that fire departments in Baden-Württemberg can communicate securely and reliably, no matter the circumstances. This investment underscores the state's commitment to the safety and security of its citizens.
