Egypt modernizes its train network via shipment from TCC
In a significant stride towards modernizing Egypt's transportation infrastructure, Hitachi Rail has delivered a state-of-the-art Traffic Control Center (TCC) for the Cairo-Alexandria railway line. The project, which began in 2013, has seen a substantial investment of over €100m (approximately £86m).
The main lines of the Cairo-Alexandria line have been updated with a modern electronic signalling system, including digital interlockings, new signals, and motorised drives. Level crossings have also been modernised as part of the delivery of the Cairo TCC.
New technical buildings, including main and secondary towers, have been constructed to house the TCC system. This system aims to enhance safety for both road and rail users, making daily travel safe, seamless, and more efficient for Egyptian citizens.
Bruno Teixeira, the general project manager of Hitachi Rail, began his role for the modernization of the important Cairo-Alexandria railway line in 2023. Under his leadership, Hitachi Rail has played a critical role in the project, ensuring that the Cairo TCC is designed to manage the 19 stations that make up the Cairo-Alexandria line.
Hitachi Rail has now delivered the Cairo TCC to Egyptian National Railways, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the Cairo-Alexandria line. The delivery of the Cairo TCC is intended to improve the management and safety of the Cairo-Alexandria line, making it a safer and more reliable transportation option for Egyptian citizens.
As the fourth annual CiTTi Awards approaches on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London, the achievements and innovations in rail, such as the Cairo TCC project, will be recognised. The project serves as a testament to Hitachi Rail's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure worldwide.
