Elderly women in the city are victims of numerous frauds - Witnesses sought for investigation
In two separate incidents, two unknown men posed as employees of a telecommunications and city utilities company to gain access to elderly residents' apartments in Sternbuschweg and Marktstraße. The incidents, which occurred recently, have left the community on edge, and the police are currently investigating.
In the first incident, an 81-year-old resident on Sternbuschweg was approached by one of the men, who claimed to be an electric company employee. The senior, initially suspicious but eventually letting the stranger into her apartment, found herself distracted by the suspect working in her bathroom and giving her things to hold. However, it wasn't until later that she discovered jewelry and money worth a five-figure sum were missing from her apartment. The suspect then left the apartment after the theft, claiming he wanted to look around the basement and did not return.
The second incident occurred in Marktstraße, where an unknown man posing as a city utilities worker approached a 93-year-old resident. A vigilant neighbour reported the fraud at 14:13. The senior initially suspected the stranger but eventually let him into her apartment. The suspect briefly left the senior alone during the incident, only to return and steal a jewelry box from the apartment before fleeing.
The police have not yet confirmed if the incidents in Sternbuschweg and Marktstraße are related, and no further details about the stolen jewelry or cash were provided in the article. However, the Criminal Investigation Department 32 has taken up the investigation of the incident in Marktstraße.
The police are urging anyone with information about the unknown men to come forward and call 0203 2800. They remind residents to always ask for official identification from anyone claiming to be a utility or telecommunications worker before allowing them access to their homes.
