Election Campaign Concludes for Ducsu Polls Tonight
The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election for 2022 is set to take place on 9 September, with a total of 471 candidates contesting for 28 positions. Here's a breakdown of the candidates and positions involved.
Polling will continue uninterrupted from 8am to 4pm on the day of the election. A total of 40,000 voters are eligible to cast their ballots.
For the prestigious positions of President, Vice-President, General Secretary, and Assistant General Secretary, 48, 19, 48, and 25 candidates are vying, respectively. The candidates running for the position of Assistant General Secretary on the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal-backed Abid-Hamim-Mayed panel are Saifur Rahman and Nazmul Hasan.
In the race for the key posts of Secretary, there are several contenders. For Health and Environment Secretary, 15 candidates are in the running. The candidates of the JCD-backed Abid-Hamim-Mayed panel held an oath ceremony at Bot Tola. For Career Development Secretary, the same number of candidates are contesting.
The candidates for Science and Technology Secretary number 12, for Human Rights and Law Secretary, 11, for Social Service Secretary, 17, for Student Transport Secretary, 12, for Common Room, Reading Room, and Cafeteria Secretary, 11, for Literature and Cultural Secretary, 19, and for Research and Publication Secretary, 9.
For the post of Liberation War and Democratic Movement Secretary, there are 17 candidates. Notably, Meghmallar Basu, the General Secretary candidate from the "Protirodh Porshad" panel, participated in the final day of campaigning despite being physically unwell.
The candidates are actively engaging in last-minute outreach for the Ducsu and hall union election. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali has warned that stern action will be taken against any attempt to disrupt the election. He also stated that they are fully prepared to extend all possible cooperation in line with the directives of the Election Commission.
Anyone trying to thwart the Ducsu election will face strict legal measures, according to DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali. He further emphasised that they will ensure a free and fair election. The candidates have been seen canvassing and holding rallies across the university campus, making this election one of the most competitive in recent years.
