Electric buses from Irizar e-mobility set for delivery to London Gatwick Airport
Irizar e-Mobility to Introduce Fully Electric Buses at London Gatwick Airport
London Gatwick Airport has announced a partnership with Irizar e-Mobility to introduce a fleet of 14 fully electric buses, marking a significant step towards a greener future for the airport.
Irizar e-Mobility, a company with over 50 electric buses in operation across multiple British cities, will be supplying the buses. The company, in collaboration with BYD Auto and Alexander Dennis (ADL), manufactures battery buses primarily for the British market and has supplied the largest electric bus fleets in Europe.
The new buses will incorporate digital vision systems aimed at enhancing visibility around the vehicle for operational safety. These systems will provide drivers with clearer views to the front, sides, and rear of the buses.
The buses will be Irizar ie tram vehicles, each measuring 18 metres in length. The Irizar ie tram model features a design influenced by modern tram aesthetics, offering high passenger capacity and step-free access. This design is not unique to the buses at London Gatwick Airport, as the Irizar e-Mobility buses in service across the UK also offer similar features.
The buses will operate using Irizar's latest generation battery technology, similar to the buses currently in operation across the UK. Charging will be handled by an ultra-fast pantograph system, capable of fully recharging the buses in under six minutes. This system is likely to be used in the Irizar e-Mobility buses serving in the UK, as it is used at London Gatwick Airport.
The buses will be used to transport passengers between long-stay car parks and terminal buildings at London Gatwick Airport. They will also include luggage racks to support airport users' needs, a feature that is common in the Irizar e-Mobility buses operating in the UK.
Irizar e-Mobility's involvement in the UK market extends beyond the London Gatwick Airport project. The company currently operates over 50 electric buses across various British cities, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuel-powered buses. The buses are entirely electric, using no fossil fuels for operation, just like the buses at London Gatwick Airport.
This partnership is a significant step towards making London Gatwick Airport a more sustainable and eco-friendly transportation hub. The introduction of these electric buses will reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the airport's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
