Volkswagen is gearing up to take the European small-car market by storm with its upcoming all-electric vehicle, the ID. Polo. The car, which will be unveiled at the Munich Motor Show, is set to play a central role in maintaining Volkswagen's dominance in this competitive sector as electrification accelerates.

The ID. Polo will be offered with two battery pack options: a 38kWh and a larger 56kWh. The performance-focused ID. Polo GTI, scheduled for launch in 2026, will be equipped with the larger battery pack, providing an estimated WLTP range of around 450km.

The ID. Polo GTI will compete with the MINI JCW Electric and Alpine A290, among others, in the burgeoning market of small performance EVs. To set itself apart, the ID. Polo GTI will boast a spacious cabin, thanks to its electric platform, and a slew of high-tech features. The dash will feature a 10.9-inch digital driver's screen and a 12.9-inch central infotainment display.

In a nod to the 2023 ID.2all concept, the ID. Polo GTI will also feature physical rotary controls for volume and climate, a departure from the touch-based controls common in many EVs. The car will be approximately 4,050mm long with a 2,600mm wheelbase.

The ID. Polo GTI's boot capacity is quoted at 440 liters, expanding to a generous 1,330 liters with the rear seats folded. The car will be built at VW Group facilities in Spain alongside the Cupra Raval and an upcoming Skoda small SUV.

The ID. Polo will be based on the new MEB Entry platform, designed for small, cost-effective EVs. The ID. Polo will support fast-charging at up to 125kW, enabling a 10 to 80% top-up in roughly 20 minutes.

In addition to the ID. Polo GTI, Volkswagen has plans for an even cheaper EV, the ID.1, due in 2027 with a projected price under €20,000 (around A$33,000). The ID. Cross, a compact SUV spin-off of the ID. Polo, is scheduled for unveiling in 2025.

With the ID. Polo, Volkswagen aims to solidify its position as a leader in the European small-car market and set a new standard for electric vehicles in this segment. The ID. Polo is set to redefine what small EVs can offer, blending performance, style, and practicality in a compact package.
