In the automotive landscape of July 2025, electric vehicles (EVs) have made a significant stride, accounting for 18.4% of all new car registrations in Germany - a 5.5% increase from the previous year. This growth is particularly noteworthy as the share of EVs remained almost stable compared to the previous month, demonstrating a steady trend.

Carwow, a prominent online automotive platform, has been at the forefront of documenting these developments. Their preliminary data suggests a significant increase in BEV sales in August 2025, further indicating a positive trajectory for EV adoption.

The average discounts on electric vehicles in July 2025 were around 5% higher than in June, and a notable 9% higher than at the beginning of the year. This trend is particularly significant as several car manufacturers in Germany have been offering attractive discounts to attract customers. Despite the end of direct state purchase incentives, these discounts, coupled with rising rebates and falling prices for EVs, have contributed to narrowing the price gaps with combustion cars.

However, concerns about the European car market persist. Mercedes-Benz CEO has expressed worries about the market facing weak demand, growing competition, and ambitious regulatory requirements.

Interestingly, the story doesn't end with battery-electric vehicles. Hybrid models have also seen a surge in interest. In July 2025, 28.4% of all new car registrations in Germany were for hybrid models (excluding plug-in hybrids), representing a 56% increase compared to July 2024. Furthermore, a further 10.3% of all new car registrations were for plug-in hybrids.

In light of these trends, Carwow is advocating for smart incentives directly for end customers to facilitate the switch to electric vehicles. They are urging for a shift in Germany from multi-million euro fleet funding to direct support for private buyers, especially in the entry and mid-range segments. Such an approach, they believe, will make the switch to e-mobility more realistic for a wider population.

Inquiries about BEVs on Carwow's online platform increased by 69% year-on-year in July 2025, and by 14% compared to June 2025. This surge in inquiries underscores the growing public interest in electric vehicles.

The UK has also seen success with direct purchase premiums for electric vehicles, a strategy that Carwow has highlighted as effective. As the EV revolution continues to unfold, it's clear that incentives, discounts, and a shift in consumer interest are key drivers of this transformation.
