In the heart of Berlin, the Neukölln Left, a district branch of the Left Party, held a pro-Palestinian festival on August 9. However, the event has been marred by criticism and protests due to its associations with Hamas.

According to reports, a group attending the festival was reportedly close to Hamas, as stated in the Berlin constitutional protection's report. This revelation has led to further criticism and protests, raising concerns about the festival's organisers and their ties to extremist groups.

The Neukölln Left's Department invited the "United Palestinian National Committee" (VPNK), an organisation accused of trivialising or supporting terrorism related to the events of October 7, as a speaker at their event "Neukölln stands together for Palestine" in Neukölln. Local politicians of Die Linke were also scheduled to speak, yet no distancing from extremist groups was issued by the organisers.

Kerstin Wolter, Chairperson of the Left Party, has expressed her concern about the festival and the rise in anti-Semitic crimes and anti-Arab racism in Berlin. She has called for clarification on who was invited to the festival and has accused Berlin's governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, of a lack of empathy towards the people in Gaza.

Wolter has also criticised Wegner for dividing the city instead of uniting it due to his lack of action regarding Gaza. She has proposed raising the Palestinian flag alongside the Israeli flag in front of the Red City Hall to send a signal of solidarity with the people in Gaza.

In contrast, Wolter has previously rejected the demand to remove Israeli flags from public buildings. She has also advocated for increased visibility for Jewish and Palestinian life in Berlin. The Left Party chairperson has stated that cooperation with individuals or organisations linked to Hamas is not acceptable.

However, Wolter has not specified which individuals or organisations she considers to be close to Hamas. This ambiguity has added to the controversy surrounding the Neukölln Left's pro-Palestinian festival.

Notably, Philmon Ghirmai, state chair of the Green Party, has expressed similar sentiments as Kerstin Wolter, voicing his concern about the rise in anti-Semitic crimes and anti-Arab racism in Berlin.

The controversy surrounding the Neukölln Left's pro-Palestinian festival continues to spark heated debates, with calls for transparency and clear distancing from extremist groups. The festival, intended to show solidarity with the Palestinian people, has instead become a focal point of contention in Berlin's political landscape.
