"Elevated Anxiety": Ceremonial Display dedicated to Eva Palmer Sikelianos, held in Saarbrücken

Konstantinos Avramis, Eleni Niotaki, and Despoina Georga, three young theatre makers, are set to present "Upward Panic" at the Studio Theatre of Theater im Viertel in Saarbrücken on June 24 and 25, 2025. This thought-provoking performance lasts 56 minutes and will be performed in Greek with English subtitles.

"Upward Panic" is a unique production that aims to correct a historical imbalance by highlighting the contributions of Eva Palmer Sikelianos, an American-Greek artist born in the USA and raised in Paris. Sikelianos, who lived from 1874 to 1952, was a pioneer in the fields of antifascism, feminism, queer identity, weaving, and choreography.

The performance uses ritualistic elements to convey the message and emphasizes the political dimension of Palmer's work. It portrays Palmer as a trailblazer, showcasing her significant impact on the artistic world.

Egia Moutafoglou directs the production, with Thomas Pitzalidis penning the play and Dimitris Kakogiannis composing the music. The Greek Protasi Theatre Company, the creators of "Upward Panic", are renowned for their innovative and thought-provoking performances.

Sikelianos, who co-founded the first modern sapphic community in Paris, moved to Greece where she studied Byzantine music and mastered ancient weaving techniques. She also lived in close exchange with choreographer Isadora Duncan.

In 1927, Sikelianos staged an ancient drama in an amphitheatre, creating a lasting connection between antiquity and the present. This performance is said to have inspired the creation of "Upward Panic".
