Elevators of Bica and Lavra, along with the Funicular of Graça, are directed to be temporarily halted by Carlos Moedas' commands.
In a tragic turn of events, Portugal experienced a heart-wrenching incident on Thursday when the Glória elevator derailed, leading to the loss of 15 lives and injuring 18 others. The Lisbon City Council declared a national day of mourning in response to the devastating accident.
The Glória Funicular, a popular attraction among tourists, connects Martim Moniz and Largo da Graça, traversing a distance of approximately 265 meters. Managed by Carris, the Glória Funicular, along with the Lavra, Bica elevators, and another funicular, the Glória Funicular itself, were immediately suspended for equipment inspection following the derailment.
The exact cause of the derailment remains unspecified. However, in response to the incident, Carlos Moedas, the President of the Lisbon City Council, ordered the immediate suspension of operations of all the affected elevators. As a further precautionary measure, Moedas also declared three days of municipal mourning.
Among the injured, five suffered serious injuries, while 13 were treated for light injuries. The Glória Funicular's derailment took place at an unspecified location.
The Lavra elevator, another attraction managed by Carris, connects Rua da Câmara Pestana and Largo da Anunciada. The Bica elevator, another popular tourist spot, connects Rua de São Paulo to Largo do Calhariz. Both the Lavra and Bica elevators were also affected by the suspension of operations.
Interestingly, the engineer who designed the Lavra, Glória, and Bica funiculars was Raoul Mesnier de Ponsar. His designs have been a significant part of Lisbon's landscape for many years.
The Glória Funicular connects Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in the Bairro Alto, providing a vital link between two popular tourist destinations. The incident has left the city and its residents in shock, with many offering their condolences and prayers for the affected families.
In these difficult times, the community of Lisbon stands united, seeking answers and healing from this tragic event. The authorities are working diligently to investigate the cause of the derailment and ensure the safety of the city's infrastructure moving forward.
