Eleven people have perished in Ivory Coast
In a heartbreaking incident, a canoe capsized on the Sassandra River in the city of Buyo, southwestern Ivory Coast, on Friday. Solidarity Minister Belmonde Dogo confirmed the accident on his Facebook account on Saturday, reporting that eleven people, including women, girls, and an infant, lost their lives. Three individuals managed to survive the accident.
The exact cause of the capsizing is not specified, but reports suggest that the incident involved a hippo. Hippos are most frequently cited in officially registered animal-human conflict incidents resulting in death or injury in Ivory Coast, according to a 2022 study by Ivorian scientists.
The study, conducted by local scientists, did not specify the exact cause of the capsizing incident on the Sassandra River. It did, however, estimate the hippo population in Ivory Coast to be around 500. The hippo population in Ivory Coast is spread across several rivers in the south.
Despite the high number of incidents involving hippos, the study does not discuss the potential reasons for these conflicts or indicate whether the number of hippos in Ivory Coast has increased or decreased over time.
The search for the missing individuals is ongoing. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic incident.
