Eligible for Departmental Funding Despite Unannounced and Indecisive Status!

Vidushi Sharma, a student at Princeton University, embarked on an extraordinary journey this year, advocating for the reintroduction of Sanskrit at the institution. This passion for Sanskrit was sparked during her freshman year, when she received funding from the Classics department to further her studies.

Sharma's interest in Sanskrit was rooted in her desire to deepen her understanding of the relationships between language and culture in the ancient world. A love for Latin and the joy of translating ancient prose and poetry had been present since her early academic years. However, it was the Sanskrit language that truly captivated her.

Initially, Sharma had not taken a Classics course. Her academic pursuits led her to departments such as geoscience, math, comparative literature, and philosophy. Despite this, she felt a strong pull towards Sanskrit and ancient Greek. This pull grew stronger when she was rejected from her choice global seminar, leaving her with no summer plans.

In the face of this setback, Sharma decided to seize the opportunity to immerse herself in Sanskrit. She applied for and received significant funding from the Classics department to study Sanskrit or ancient Greek. With this support, she took Sanskrit lessons three times a week and dedicated her entire summer to one-on-one study.

During this time, Sharma not only mastered the Sanskrit language but also gained a deeper understanding of her Indian, Hindu-Buddhist upbringing. This journey was not just an academic pursuit for Sharma; it was a personal one as well.

Inspired by her own learning journey, Sharma decided to start a petition to bring Sanskrit back to Princeton. Her efforts were not in vain, as the India Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) provided her with Sanskrit teaching support during the summer of her first year of study.

Sharma's story is a testament to the power of persistence and the joy of learning. Her journey serves as an inspiration to many, encouraging students to pursue their passions and advocate for the subjects they love.
