On Sunday, July 20, 2025, at 14:49 hrs, the Elmshorn Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to a traffic accident on Wittenberger Straße (junction Sibirien) in Elmshorn.
The incident involved an Opel Astra car, which left the road, overran a traffic island, and collided with the traffic light system. As a result, the vehicle was severely damaged, trapping both men inside.
The Fire Fighting Force (FF) Elmshorn, with 30 members and 9 vehicles, arrived on the scene swiftly. The fire department's focus was not only on rescuing the trapped individuals but also on containing and cleaning up the extensive spill of operating fluids that had occurred.
The fire department first rescued the driver, and then, with the aid of heavy hydraulic equipment, freed the passenger through the rear hatch about half an hour after the alarm was raised. Both patients were taken to the hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries.
The THW Elmshorn was also present at the incident, providing additional support. The police had 4 members and 2 vehicles at the scene to manage traffic and investigate the accident.
The Elmshorn City Works was also involved in the clean-up operation, ensuring the junction was made safe and clean as soon as possible.
The damaged traffic light system was secured using a turntable ladder. For inquiries, contact Kreisfeuerwehrverband Pinneberg, whose press spokesperson, Michael Bunk, can be reached at 04120 8254 700. Fax inquiries can be sent to (04121) 265951, and email inquiries can be sent to [email protected].
