Elon Musk Announces Formation of America Party, Continues Political Engagement

In a move that has shaken up the U.S. political landscape, tech mogul Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party, the America Party. The announcement came just days after Musk made a significant donation to Republican-affiliated super PACs, a move that has been the subject of much scrutiny and debate.

According to a recent FEC report, Musk donated a total of $10 million to the Senate Leadership Fund and the Congressional Leadership Fund on June 27, 2022. Each donation was $5 million, and these were the only contributions made by Musk to these super PACs, as of the end of June. However, Musk's political spending beyond this period is not covered in the reported FEC activity.

Musk's donations came amid his feuding with President Donald Trump over federal spending legislation. Musk is a vocal critic of a recent major tax and spending bill known as the "Big Beautiful Bill," which he believes wastes money and harms America's strategic interests.

The tech entrepreneur appears to maintain some engagement with Republican politics by supporting primary challenges against GOP lawmakers who backed that bill. Musk sees backing such candidates as a way to influence the Republican Party from within, even as he simultaneously works on building his third party. Musk has floated the idea of laser-focusing the America Party’s efforts initially on a few key Senate and House seats as a strategic way to gain a foothold outside the traditional two parties.

However, as of late July 2025, the America Party has yet to take concrete steps like formal filings or candidate endorsements, leading some analysts to suggest the effort is stalling or more of a political statement than a fully operational entity. Musk continues to wield influence politically through a super PAC called America PAC, which allows unlimited fundraising but must remain independent from candidates and parties, providing another tool for Musk to shape political outcomes.

Musk pledged to form the America Party, but there are few signs that he has taken concrete steps in that direction. His feud with Donald Trump has intensified in this context, partly fueled by Musk's opposition to Trump's signature bill, which includes phasing out EV tax credits impacting Tesla—a key Musk business interest. Trump has publicly acknowledged Musk’s displeasure but remains somewhat conciliatory in tone.

The formation of the America Party, if it comes to fruition, would be another political entity for Musk to influence political spending. Musk's political spending, as of the end of June, was not pulled back. In fact, Musk plowed more than $45 million of his own money into America PAC, a super PAC he oversees.

In summary, Elon Musk is politically positioning himself as the founder of a third party, the America Party, to challenge the entrenched Democrat-Republican system, with active short-term involvement in Republican primaries against Trump-aligned candidates. However, the America Party is still nascent with uncertain prospects of becoming a major political force, and Musk appears to balance this with ongoing activity via political donations and a super PAC.
