Detmold Joins "GroundAir" Competition to Transform Cityscapes and Boost Climate Protection
The city of Detmold is taking a significant step towards climate protection and urban renewal by participating in the "GroundAir" competition organised by Provinzial Insurance. Bernd Kruse, a member of the city portal's urban planning team, is leading the charge in this initiative.
Unsealing areas and greening are key strategies in the competition, aimed at transforming sealed areas into vibrant living spaces. This approach not only reduces the city's CO2 footprint but also contributes to a more pleasant urban climate, particularly on hot days.
Bernd Kruse is responsible for the municipal planning staff and can be consulted by interested parties to arrange the delivery of stone or gravel quantities for the renovation of unpaved areas. Prior arrangement is essential due to the city's lack of larger storage areas.
Unsealing areas also offers several environmental benefits. It allows rainwater to drain better, reducing flooding and promoting groundwater recharge. This process contributes to a more sustainable urban environment, as it lowers the temperature and supports biodiversity by providing habitat for plants, birds, and other animals.
The "GroundAir" competition encourages citizens to open sealed areas of courtyards and driveways, and convert gravel gardens into green spaces, gardens, or near-natural areas. Cash prizes and vouchers for a garden centre of choice can be won in the competition.
Before-and-after photos should be uploaded to bodenluft.net for the competition. For waste disposal, uncontaminated construction waste from unsealed areas can be disposed of at the Recycling Center Hellsiek on the Hellsiek Landfill and Recycling Center Maibolte at the Composting Plant Lemgo.
Information about drop-off points, including opening hours, directions, and waste fractions, can be found on the Lippe Waste Management Association's website at abfall-lippe.de/abgabestellen.
By participating in the "GroundAir" competition, Detmold is not only contributing to climate protection but also creating a more green and livable environment, improving the appearance of the city and promoting relaxation and well-being of the citizens.
