In a heartwarming display of community action, the Sternfeld youth fire brigade in Brandenburg has taken on the latest installment of the Apple Tree Challenge. The challenge, initiated by Janine Westphal, aims to plant apple trees across different regions of Germany.

The Sternfeld juniors, consisting of six girls and three boys aged 8 to 15, were alerted by Fire Chief Nico Brockhoff to carry out a recovery operation at Sternfeld station. With determination and enthusiasm, they stormed onto the platform in full gear, carrying a stretcher.

The apple tree for the challenge was obtained from the Demmin tree nursery Meck-Green. However, unfortunately, the tree was lost during transit. But, as fate would have it, another apple tree was found on a regional train coming from Demmin.

The planting ceremony was a collaborative effort. After planting, Fine and Kai watered the young apple tree with a hose, while Nico Brockhoff assisted by removing grass sod for the planting hole and the firefighter children used a shovel to complete the planting hole.

Janine Westphal, who is the person responsible for nominating the youth fire brigade for the next part of the Apfelbaum challenge, explained the nomination as a way to carry the community action into other federal states. Her cousin is in the fire brigade in Immerdingen, Baden-Württemberg, and the youth fire brigades in Burow/Weltzin and Immerdingen have also been nominated as the next participants in the challenge.

Upon completion of the task, youth leader Manuel Steege and member Janine Westphal took to social media to announce the successful planting of the apple tree. The Sternfeld youth fire brigade has shown that they are not just firefighters, but also active members of their community, committed to making a difference.
