The album, released in June, has been making waves in the music industry with its catchy melodies and clever lyrics. Carpenter worked with renowned songwriters Jack Antonoff and Amy Allen, who have also penned hits for Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Justin Bieber.
The lyrics of "Man's Best Friend" are smart, funny, and filled with references. The disco sound of Abba and the Bee Gees can be heard again and again on the album, giving it a nostalgic feel. The catchiness of the melodies on "Man's Best Friend" is higher than on the previous album "Short n' Sweet."
The first single from the album, "Manchild," plays with typical Carpenter clichés and features airy keyboard riffs. The 38-minute album is a testament to Carpenter's growth as an artist, where she boldly asserts her power.
However, the cover of "Man's Best Friend" has been a subject of controversy. It features Carpenter kneeling on all fours in a black mini-dress with a headless male body in a black suit tugging at her blonde hair. The cover has been criticized for catering to male fantasies and not empowering women. Despite this, Carpenter continues to assert her power in the album's content.
To counter the criticism, Carpenter released an alternative cover showing her standing in an elegant outfit and leaning on a man's arm. The album also features many ironic tracks with many 70s influences, adding another layer to its appeal.
