Encounter in Bijapur: Five Out of Thirty-One Maoist Rebels Committed Violence Identified; Division Secretary Among the Casualties
In a significant development in the ongoing fight against insurgency, an encounter between security forces and Maoist cadres in Indravati National Park, Bijapur district, South Bastar, Chhattisgarh, resulted in the death of 31 Maoists. The encounter, which lasted nearly eight hours, took place following a joint search operation launched on Sunday based on specific intelligence inputs.
According to Bastar range inspector general of police P Sunderraj, the bodies of the remaining 26 slain Maoists will be identified soon. Among the identified Maoists are Hunga Hemla, commander of platoon number eleven of Maoists, and Hunga Karma, a divisional committee (DVCM) member with a bounty of Rs eight lakh. Ramesh, a member of the national park area committee of Maoists, is another identified Maoist with a bounty of Rs two lakh. Subhash Ayam and Sonnu are area committee members among the identified Maoists.
Three other identified Maoists were in the rank of commander and carried a reward of Rs five lakh each. Notably, among the slain commanders were Vanraj Kumar Tiwari, a divisional commander, and Govind Nayak, special zone commander, both of whom held high positions within the Maoist organization.
The encounter resulted in the loss of two security personnel, a district reserve guard (DRG) jawan, Naresh Dhruv, and a special task force (STF) constable Basit Rawte, while two other security personnel were injured.
Director general of police (DGP) of Chhattisgarh Arun Dev Gautam, ADG (Naxal operation) Vivekanand Sinha, and Bastar IG Mr Sunderraj inspected the weapons and ammunition recovered at the encounter site. The recovered items include one Ak 47, one SLR, one INSAS rifle, a 303 rifle, one 315-bore rifle, eight numbers of 12 bore rifles, one huge stand of rocket launcher, six BGLs, four muzzle loading rifles, and nine IEDs. Large quantities of explosives and other Naxal materials were also recovered.
This significant encounter is expected to deal a significant blow to the Maoist insurgency in the region and is a testament to the relentless efforts of the security forces in combating this ongoing threat.
