Endorsement of Lo Russo by Schlein
In the political landscape of Turin, Italy, Secretary Elly Schlein has been making waves as the lead figure of the Democratic Party (PD). Recent events at the Unity Festival have shed light on her views regarding the upcoming 2027 municipal elections and her approach to key issues.
During the festival, Schlein reiterated the importance of unity among the forces of the center-left, emphasising that the right must adapt to the fact that they will no longer be able to divide themselves, especially during elections. She also highlighted the need for focus on public health, education, and the fight against organized crime and crimes in Gaza.
In a move that has sparked speculation, Schlein did not push for a definitive "yes" regarding Mayor Stefano Lo Russo's candidacy for the 2027 elections. This decision was made to avoid compromising alliances and maintain a balanced approach. However, there is a possibility that Schlein might impose a name of her own for the mayoral candidate if the current situation warrants it.
The question of the mayoral candidate is a delicate balance on the left, with discussions about open primaries and potential vetoes from the Five Star Movement and the Greens. Secretaries Marcello Mazzu and Mimmo Rossi have made it clear that Mayor Lo Russo is not up for discussion in this regard.
Mayor Lo Russo, for his part, expressed his readiness to challenge the center-right once more in the next elections, expressing optimism about the analysis of their achievements and potential improvements. He referred to the constant back-and-forth about the mayoral candidate as "summer agitations."
Schlein's trust in the Turin PD and the Turin administration was evident during the festival, as she confirmed her full support for them. She also criticised the current government's handling of the 24 billion plan, emphasising the need for a European fund to support the automotive industry and incentivize the purchase of national vehicles.
The meeting between Schlein and Lo Russo was brief, with handshakes, banter, and an agreement on a future event (not in Turin). The enthusiasm for Schlein among the militants and faithful of the PD seemed undiminished at the Unity Festival.
After the festival, Schlein was seen in the city of Bra. Meanwhile, Mayor Lo Russo attended the festival after arriving from the airport.
The Unity Festival is an event where political leaders gather to discuss and strategise on the future of their parties and the country. As the 2027 municipal elections approach, the political landscape of Turin promises to be an interesting one to watch.
