Enemy drones are intercepted and destroyed in the Kingisepp region, close to the Estonian border by local air defense systems.
The Leningrad region has been the scene of a series of drone attacks, with the Air Defense Forces successfully intercepting and destroying a significant number of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) since August.
On July 31, the Air Defense Forces intercepted 51 APU drones over St. Petersburg and Lenoblast, marking a notable incident in this series. Unlike the July incident, Governor Alexander Drozdenko provided a clarification regarding the August incidents, but remained silent about the July incident.
The July incident involved drones originating from the APU, similar to those intercepted or destroyed in August. However, unlike the August incident near the Ust-Luga terminal, the July incident did not result in any reported fires or casualties, according to preliminary data.
The drone attacks did not limit themselves to the Kingisepp area or the Ust-Luga terminal. Ten more drones were destroyed near the port of Ust-Luga in the morning, and six of these drones were shot down in the Kingisepp region near the Estonian border. One of the downed drones in previous attacks caused a fire in the Ust-Luga terminal.
The drone attacks in the Kingisepp area near the Estonian border are attributed to Ukraine within the context of the Russia-Ukraine war. Local authorities reported an increase in the activity of unmanned aerial vehicles in the Kingisepp area.
The series of drone attacks continued in August, with the airspace defense forces destroying eight drones near St. Petersburg and Lenoblast on the first day of the month. On Sunday, August 24, the Air Defense Forces of the Leningrad Region destroyed sixteen APU drones.
Firefighters and rescuers from the Ministry of emergency situations are working on the site of the fire at the Ust-Luga terminal, and preliminary data indicates that there are no victims from the fire. However, the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Governor Drozdenko, in his clarification regarding the August incidents, emphasized the regularity and extent of the threat posed by these drone attacks. The Leningrad region authorities are working closely with the Air Defense Forces to ensure the safety and security of the region's inhabitants.
This series of drone attacks serves as a reminder of the ongoing tension between Russia and Ukraine, and the innovative ways in which conflict can manifest in the modern world. The Leningrad region authorities are urging vigilance and caution in the face of this threat.
