Energy firm NorthWestern signs agreement to aid in the development of Quantica's data center project in Montana
NorthWestern Energy, a leading provider of essential energy infrastructure and services, has signed a letter of intent to provide energy services for Quantica Infrastructure's proposed data center development in Montana. This collaboration aims to commence initial electric service as early as 2026, with the full Phase 1 expansion expected by 2030.
The partnership is designed to ensure reliability for Quantica's tenants while supporting grid stability and cost control for all customers. By spreading the fixed costs of operating Montana-based energy infrastructure across a broader customer base, this collaboration could improve cost efficiency.

NorthWestern Energy's operations in Montana and Yellowstone National Park are conducted through its subsidiary, NW Corp, and its operations in South Dakota and Nebraska are conducted through its subsidiary, NWE Public Service. NorthWestern Energy has provided service in South Dakota and Nebraska since 1923 and in Montana since 2002. The projected Phase 1 energy service load is 500 megawatts, with phased growth to 1 gigawatt.
The energy supply solution would require a balanced portfolio of new resources, including both renewable and on-demand generation. NorthWestern Energy is currently conducting a transmission study to assess how best to meet Quantica's energy needs.
