New Coalition Aims to Modernize US Power Grids and Promote Distributed Energy Resources

A new coalition, named Common Charge, was announced on Wednesday with a mission to modernize the US power grids and promote the spread of energy resources. The organization, which is a registered 501c3, emphasizes the role of distributed resources like batteries, electric vehicles, rooftop solar, and smart thermostats in stabilizing the grid during times of stress.

Katherine Hamilton, the Executive Director of the coalition, stated in a release that the tools to lower energy bills and protect the grid are already in place as local solutions. She further added that it is crucial to enable these solutions through smart policy and regulation that prioritizes consumers.

The coalition aims to unite stakeholders to replace the outdated energy system with a more flexible, resilient, consumer-focused system. The organization argues that maximizing distributed assets is essential to protect the grid and energy consumers in the era of data centers, rising energy costs, and severe weather.

The coalition's objective is to support the grid and benefit ratepayers. To achieve this, the coalition plans to advance policy reform. The founding members of the coalition include Advanced Energy United, Charge Ahead Partnership, Coalition for Community Solar Access, Eco Capital, Institute for Local Self-Reliance, Pivot Energy, Solar United Neighbors, Sunrun, and Vote Solar.

These distributed resources, according to the organization, are particularly effective during heat waves that have affected the Midwest and Northeast this summer. The coalition's goal is to drive consumers and policymakers to unlock the full potential of distributed assets.

In conclusion, Common Charge is a new coalition dedicated to promoting distributed energy resources and modernizing the US power grids. By uniting stakeholders and advocating for smart policy and regulation, the coalition hopes to create a more flexible, resilient, and consumer-focused energy system that benefits ratepayers and protects the grid in the face of rising energy costs, data centers, and severe weather.
