England and South Africa ODI teams: Who's participating, who's not?
England and South Africa are all set to lock horns in an exciting ODI series, which commences this week. The series, part of the road to the 2027 World Cup, offers a rare opportunity for both sides to test their skills outside of a World Cup year.
The England pace attack for the series includes Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood, while South Africa's bowling lineup features Lungi Ngidi and Lhuan-dre Pretorius.
Several English players will be available for the series, as they head to the Southern hemisphere for white-ball series' against New Zealand and the marquee Ashes series. The England squad for the ODI series includes Harry Brook, Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, and Phil Salt.
South Africa have retained the same 50-over playing group from their series win in Australia, with Kwena Maphaka as cover for Kagiso Rabada, who is managing an ankle injury. The replacement squad member for Rabada in the South African ODI team during his injury is Lizaad Williams.
Captain Temba Bavuma is coming back from a hamstring injury and is expected to be managed in a similar way in England, as he was during the WTC final and the ODI series in Australia. South Africa recently beat Australia in an ODI contest, despite conceding over 400 in the final match of the series.
England's ODI squad for the series against South Africa includes Jamie Smith and Phil Salt competing for the second opener slot alongside Ben Duckett. Notably, Sonny Baker has been selected in a senior international squad for the first time, impressing with his bowling in The Hundred.
The series schedule includes matches in Leeds, London, and Southampton. The series will be followed by a T20I series, with Rabada likely not available for South Africa until the T20I series, but has been included in the ODI squad.
