England lacks a mechanism for effectively soaking up pressure during one-day internationals, according to commentator Mark Butcher.

England's recent form in One Day International (ODI) cricket has taken a turn for the worse, with the team winning only 7 out of 21 matches since the end of the 2023 World Cup. This was evident in the first ODI of the series between England and South Africa at Headingley, where England was bowled out for a dismal 131.

The match did not last even 50 overs, indicative of a collapse in England's batting lineup. No member of the bottom six English batsmen scored more than 10 runs in the match. Wiaan Mulder and Keshav Maharaj ran through the rest of the English order, taking the last seven wickets for just 29 runs.

South Africa's bowling was not exceptional, but England's poor shot selection contributed to their defeat. Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett started the match well for England, reaching 102-3 after 17.1 overs. However, the English players in the second innings did not take responsibility to stabilise partnerships and set a better score.

Mark Butcher, a former England international, criticised England's batting performance in ODI cricket. He expressed concern about England's lack of ability to absorb pressure when facing a challenging situation. Butcher also noted that England's middle order lacked responsibility, resulting in poor shot selection.

Aiden Markram scored 86 off 55 balls to lead South Africa to a successful chase. England needs to improve their performance to avoid slipping further in the ICC team rankings. The second ODI in the series between England and South Africa will be held at Lord's on September 4.
