England's Rationale for Incorporating Jordan Cox in the Squad for the Ireland T20Is
England Announce Expanded T20I Squad for Ireland Series
England have added wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox to their T20I squad for the upcoming matches against Ireland, bringing the squad size to 15 players. The announcement was made on September 3.
Jordan Cox, who had an outstanding season in The Hundred, scoring 367 runs at a strike rate of 174, will join the squad as a wicketkeeping option. This strategic depth addition comes despite no player being replaced due to injury or withdrawal.
Cox batted at No.3 for the Oval Invincibles in their successful Hundred campaign, where he hit 22 sixes, three more than the next best. He has previously played three ODIs and two T20Is for England.
The original squad only had Tom Banton, Jos Buttler, and Phil Salt as specialist batters. However, all other batting options in the expanded squad are all-rounders, including Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Tom Hartley, Jamie Overton, and Rehan Ahmed.
Jos Buttler, Phil Salt, and new addition Cox will share the wicketkeeping duties. Saqib Mahmood, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Sonny Baker, Luke Wood, and the aforementioned all-rounders will form the bowling unit.
Notably, Cox was not included in the squad for the T20I series against South Africa. The T20Is against Ireland will be played between September 17 and 21.
