England's recent One-Day International disaster is headlined by Sonny Baker's unexpected and uninvited debut record
In a disappointing turn of events for England, their latest recruit Sonny Baker made his international debut at Headingley, but the occasion ended in a disheartening fashion.
Jos Buttler, England's greatest-ever white-ball batter, handed Baker his first cap, but the youngster's debut was overshadowed by England's collapse in the 50-over match.
Baker, who last played a 50-over professional game in 2022, fits into the wider theme of his generation of England players who don't have a grounding in the 50-over game. However, his debut performance was far from impressive.
Aiden Markram, South Africa's opener, punched several fours off Baker's bowling, causing England's early woes. Baker conceded the most runs of any England bowler on debut, with the second-highest economy rate for a debutant of all time, with a minimum of five overs bowled.
The disappointment didn't end there for England. Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton's shock withdrawal from the team increased the possibility of Sonny Baker being included in the Ashes squad. But, Smith's soft dismissal opened the floodgates for England's collapse, with Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks following suit with even softer dismissals.
England have been bowled out more times than any other team in 50-over cricket in the same time period, and their batting woes were evident in this match. Mark Butcher, commenting on Sky Sports, expressed concern about England's batting in one-day international cricket for their lack of ability to absorb and rebuild.
South Africa, who prepared by beating Australia in their own backyard less than two weeks ago, served as a reminder of England's current standing in 50-over cricket. Scotland, Nepal, and the USA all average more before they're two down compared to England.
Jofra Archer's unhittability at the other end highlighted Sonny Baker's struggles. Despite the disappointing debut, there are murmurs about Baker being a potential bolter for the Ashes squad. Baker himself, in a previous interview with ESPNcricinfo, acknowledged the need to not start at a top tempo straight away.
However, the skill and tenacity he possesses suggest that he has the potential to go on to play for England. Only time will tell if Baker can overcome his debut jitters and become a valuable asset to the England team.
