In the digital landscape of 2025, the web has transformed into an adversarial setting, as stated by Lionel Litty, chief security architect at Menlo Security. This shift has given birth to a new era of scams, known as Scamlexity, where AI convenience collides with a new, invisible scam surface, resulting in humans becoming the collateral damage.

This alarming trend is exemplified by the surge in ClickFix attacks, which saw a 517% increase in 2025, as reported in a separate article. Researchers have now engineered a new social engineering technique called PromptFix, a variation of ClickFix, to trick agentic AI into performing malicious actions.

Guardio, a security vendor, has successfully demonstrated this technique by tricking Perplexity's AI-powered browser Comet into buying an item from a scam e-commerce site. The attacker relies on the model's inability to fully distinguish between instructions and regular content within the same prompt.

In a test scenario, PromptFix was used to engineer an AI to cause a drive-by download attack by posing as a scammer sending a fake message from a victim's 'doctor.' If successful, the attacker gains control over the AI and, by extension, the user's machine. These attacks exploit AI's tendency to act without full context and trust too easily.

Lionel Litty agrees that AI agents are both gullible and servile. In an adversarial setting, AI agents may be easily manipulated when exposed to untrusted input. For instance, Guardio managed to get Perplexity's AI to click on a link to a genuine phishing site in an email.

The hidden prompt injection instructions caused the AI to click a button, potentially downloading a malicious payload. The security vendor warns that similar techniques could be used to send emails containing personal details, grant file-sharing permissions to cloud storage accounts, or execute other potentially malicious actions.
