Enhanced Safety Measures Implemented

In the heart of Detmold, changes have been made to the cycling guidance on Hornschen Street, following an accident cluster involving cyclists over the past three years. The decision, made by the accident commission, was based on the high number of incidents that occurred on this route section, some resulting in serious injuries.

The city portal, in collaboration with the department for urban planning and traffic management, implemented the new cycling guidance. The goal of this new regulation is to improve safety for both cyclists and pedestrians.

The changes include the mandatory use of cycling paths on both sides of Hornschen Street. In the opposite direction, the paths are now exclusively for pedestrians. This adjustment aims to avoid conflicts between cycling and pedestrian traffic and increase traffic safety.

The new regulation also addresses specific issues such as narrow side spaces near the Leopoldinum grammar school and restricted visibility at several exits. To make the new rules clearly recognizable, markings and signs have been adjusted.

The city portal acknowledges that the new regulation may initially require some getting used to, particularly for schoolchildren. However, they consider traffic safety paramount and will continue to monitor the development on Hornschen Street and incorporate the results into the medium-term plans for the expansion of the street.

Further improvements, such as additional crossing opportunities in the Spork-Eichholz area, are planned for the medium term. The implementation of the new cycling guidance is a response to concerns about traffic safety in that area and is part of the city's commitment to ensuring a safer and more efficient transport system for all its residents and visitors.

The decision to adjust the cycling guidance on Hornschen Street was unanimously passed by the roads authority, the regional government as the supervisory authority, the police, and the Lippe district. The city portal encourages everyone to familiarise themselves with the new rules and to adhere to them for the safety of all users of Hornschen Street.
