In a series of unfortunate events, protests against low wages and lavish perks for lawmakers in Indonesia have taken a violent turn, resulting in loss of life and destruction of property. The protests, initially peaceful, escalated in the cities of Makassar and Yogyakarta, not Jakarta, on Thursday and Friday.
The violence was sparked by a video showing a 21-year-old motorcyclist being run over by a vehicle belonging to a paramilitary elite unit of the Indonesian police. The events, which occurred during a protest rally, have been strongly condemned by President Prabowo Subianto.
In Makassar, three people were killed in a firebombing of the city hall, while another person died in protests in Yogyakarta, circumstances unclear. A man was also beaten to death in Makassar, mistaken for an intelligence officer.
Several lawmakers in Indonesia also had their homes looted during the protests. Among them was the Finance Minister, Sri Mulyani Indrawati. However, it's important to clarify that the incidents in Makassar and Yogyakarta were not related to the looting of homes of officials, as previously mentioned.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has issued a warning, promising decisive measures against "hooligans and looters". President Prabowo Subianto has also announced a reduction in perks for lawmakers in response to the public outcry.
In Indonesia, security measures after violent protests are effectively coordinated by a combination of government bodies including the police (Polri), military (TNI), and local government authorities to maintain order and ensure public safety.
It's worth noting that violent protests also took place in Jakarta and other cities in Indonesia last week, although details about those incidents are not available at this time.
