Modernization of Cairo-Alexandria Line Enhances Safety and Efficiency
The Cairo-Alexandria line, one of Egypt's busiest railway routes, has undergone a significant transformation with the implementation of a modern electronic signalling system. This project, estimated to have cost over €100m (approximately £86m), was initiated in 2013 and has been managed by the Cairo Traffic Control Center (TCC).
The TCC system, designed to manage the 19 stations that make up the Cairo-Alexandria line, includes digital interlockings, new signals, and motorized drives. The aim of this modernization is to make daily travel safer, seamless, and more efficient for Egyptian citizens.
The TCC project also includes the construction of new technical buildings, such as main and secondary towers. Hitachi Rail, the company responsible for the modernization, has completed the delivery of the Cairo Traffic Control Center to Egyptian National Railways.
Bruno Teixeira, the general project manager of Hitachi Rail, stated that the company's team played a critical role in modernizing the Cairo-Alexandria line. Masashi Kobayashi, another general project manager from Hitachi Rail, has been instrumental in the modernization of the Cairo-Alexandria route and contributing to the safety of everyday travel in Egypt.
In addition to the new signalling system, level crossings along the Cairo-Alexandria line have also been modernized as part of this project. This enhancement aims to improve safety for both road and rail users. The modernization of the Cairo-Alexandria line is a significant step towards providing a more reliable and efficient transport system for the Egyptian people.
