Enhancing the caliber of instruction and upgrading the standard of education are the primary goals of the program.

In the heart of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, a vibrant transformation is taking place. The Lübeck Lupes TBF, a local organisation, has spearheaded the creation of new planting concepts for the city's pedestrian zone, with a focus on site conditions and sustainability.

The new planting along Breiten Straße is not just a visual upgrade for the inner-city area, but also a valuable contribution to biodiversity. It provides habitats for insects, enhancing the city centre's appeal and promoting sustainable urban design.

A total of five different planting concepts were developed and implemented for 17 U-shaped beds. The plant selection is diverse, featuring the blue-leaved funkia (Hosta Hybride 'Halcyon'), the wild aster (Aster ageratoides 'Asran'), the autumn anemone (Anemone tomentosa 'Serenade'), and drought-tolerant grasses such as the feather grass (Stipa tenuissima). The color concept for the new planting includes subtle lilac, pink, and white tones.

The trainees in landscape gardening from Lübeck have taken the lead in this project. They were involved in the creation of one of the five planting concepts and have now taken over the planting along Breiten Straße. This hands-on experience provides them with invaluable practical knowledge.

However, it's important to note that even the most robust planting will be displaced by unwanted growth in the long run without proper irrigation and maintenance. The selected perennials are competitive, but they still require regular care to thrive.

Ulrike Schölkopf, acting head of the city greenery and traffic department of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, emphasises the importance of choosing plants that can persist at the site in the long term. She explains that the planting design was made with an emphasis on sustainability, persistence, and added value for biodiversity.

The new planting along Breiten Straße is a testament to Lübeck's commitment to sustainable urban development. It not only beautifies the city centre but also contributes to its biodiversity, making it a livelier and more attractive place for its residents and visitors alike.
