Enhancing Urban Greenery for a More Vibrant Cityscape

Aschaffenburg, a city in Germany, has joined the nationwide project "Unpavement" to promote sustainability and improve the urban climate. This initiative, primarily organised by students from the University of Applied Sciences in Koblenz, aims to replace sealed surfaces with greenery to enhance the quality of life for residents.

The city invites all its citizens, regardless of whether they are part of an association, school, private person, company, administration, or other organizations, to participate in this "unpavement" initiative. Participants can submit unsealed stone areas, along with before-and-after photos, in an online portal by October 31, 2025. More information about participation can be found on the website www.unpavement.de.

The competition management will verify the submissions and evaluate them for each municipality. A monthly "Star of the Month" unsealing project will also be recognised during the competition season. The winners in the categories of large city, medium-sized city, and small town, based on the most unsealed area, will be honoured in November 2025.

The "unpavement" project supports cities and citizens in bringing more space for nature into urban life and combating climate change. It is not just about removing concrete and asphalt surfaces but also about creating greener urban spaces that contribute to a healthier and more livable city.

A small square at the corner of Buchenweg/Ulmenweg in Nilkheim, Aschaffenburg, has already been unsealed and redesigned as part of the "unpavement" project. Approximately 315 square meters of the square were unsealed, and a lawn was laid, three trees were planted, and new benches were installed. The fountain in the square was retained during the redesign.
