In a significant leap forward for watchmaking, TAG Heuer has announced the maturation and refinement of their carbon hairspring technology. The innovative technology, which has been in development for over a decade, is being tested and refined in a series of limited edition watches.

Carole Forestier-Kasapi, the haute horlogerie and movements strategy director at TAG Heuer, explains that carbon is an ideal solution in terms of durability against magnetic fields due to its a-magnetic properties. Additionally, carbon's light weight is important in maintaining watch accuracy as heavier materials can subtly distort the spring due to gravity.

The first watch to feature the TH-Carbonspring is a technological leap forward for TAG Heuer, with the second watch following closely behind. These limited editions, which include the Monaco Flyback Chronograph and the Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon Extreme Sport, are limited to 50 pieces each.

However, the development of the new TH-Carbonspring has not been without its challenges. Developing a carbon hairspring is reportedly a challenging task in watchmaking due to the need to find the right balance between various functions. TAG Heuer's initial attempt at mass-producing carbon hairsprings in the Isograph Autavia did not meet their standards for precision.

Despite these challenges, TAG Heuer has persevered and has now developed the technology to mass-produce carbon hairsprings. Emmanuel Dupas, technical director for TAG Heuer, is involved in the ongoing optimization and development of the carbon hairspring technology.

These limited edition watches are a test to optimize the carbon hairspring technology, with the product's performance being good but not yet consistent from one hairspring to the next. The whole process of further developing the carbon hairspring technology and associated processes is ongoing.

TAG Heuer is optimistic about the potential capabilities of the TH-Carbonspring and is committed to refining and perfecting the technology before it can be used for mass production. The carbon hairspring technology is a significant step towards a more durable, accurate, and magnetic-resistant watch for the future.
