Entire Tarsin village near-annihilation leaves lone survivor standing
In the heart of Central Darfur, the Marra Mountains once held the thriving village of Tarsin, known for its renowned citrus orchards. However, a devastating landslide has left the village in ruins, burying its entire population under mud and debris.
Heavy rains triggered the landslide, but no information about the cause or responsibility has been given. The disaster is part of a larger humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where an ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is causing a significant loss of life and displacement.
The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) claims that the entire population of Tarsin was killed, with only one survivor. The victims of the landslide were estimated at over one thousand people, according to SLM/A. The identity of the one survivor remains undisclosed.
The conflict in Sudan has led to an estimated 130,000 deaths, according to U.S. research, while official reports suggest a lower number, with over 20,000 people having died since April 2023, as reported by the UN and local sources. The disaster in Tarsin is one of many tragedies occurring amidst the ongoing conflict.
Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi described the disaster as "a humanitarian tragedy that exceeds the borders of the region." He urged international aid agencies to intervene urgently in the aftermath of the Tarsin disaster. The Sudanese government has pledged to mobilize all available resources to assist those affected.
SLM/A has appealed to international organizations and the United Nations to help recover the bodies buried under the debris in Tarsin. Minni Arko Minnawi also appealed for international aid, stating that the crisis requires immediate attention and intervention.
The ongoing war in Sudan is causing a significant humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and thousands killed. The conflict has resulted in the displacement of millions of people, adding to the already dire situation.
As the international community grapples with the aftermath of the Tarsin disaster, the focus remains on providing aid, recovery, and justice for the victims and survivors. The loss of life and destruction of homes and livelihoods serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for peace and stability in Sudan.
