Established Premier League club on track for transformative £20 million academy revamp, marking the first significant overhaul in nearly three decades.
Liverpool Announces £20 Million Academy Upgrade
Liverpool Football Club has unveiled plans for a £20 million upgrade to its academy training base in Kirkby. The renovations aim to improve player development environments, modernize pitches, enhance fitness and medical areas, and incorporate advanced technology to support training and analysis.
The club has already invested £2 million in some facilities at the academy base, and the new plans are a recognition of its significant contribution to player sales. Over the last five years, more than £200 million has been generated from academy player sales, with the most recent transfer window seeing £100 million alone.
One of the key features of the upgrade is the construction of an indoor dome over the main pitch. According to academy director, Alex Inglethorpe, this will greatly improve training sessions, allowing year-round use, come rain or shine.
In addition to the indoor facility, two new floodlights have been installed on the pitches, enabling evening use, and a stand for around 500 spectators will be built. Cages have been erected for smaller-sized matches, and a new skills area has been constructed.
The upgrades also include the replacement of an artificial pitch with grass and the enhancement of medical and sport science facilities. The plans for the upgrades are expected to be submitted by the club in October, with the renovations expected to be completed by 2028.
The upgrades are intended to match the academy's facilities with those of competitors. Fenway Sports Group, the Liverpool owners, are recognizing the academy's importance with these improvements. The academy has been a significant source of players for the first team, with 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha scoring just minutes into his Premier League debut, suggesting another successful academy product.
The academy site was recently expanded to accommodate the first team's move there in 2020. The new addition to the academy is a 'padbol' court, a mix of padel, football, squash, and volleyball, offering diverse training opportunities for the young players.
The renovations at the Liverpool Academy Training Base are set to provide state-of-the-art infrastructure to foster athletic performance and development, ensuring Liverpool's academy remains a breeding ground for future football stars.
