Established Team Cadillac Considered Youthful Talent for Formula One. Instead, Opted for Seasoned Racing Veterans
Cadillac Joins the Formula 1 Grid for 2026 with Perez and Bottas
After much anticipation, it has been confirmed that American automaker Cadillac will make its debut on the Formula 1 grid in the 2026 season. The team has announced that Mexican driver Sergio Perez and Finnish racer Valtteri Bottas will be their drivers for the upcoming season.
This exciting news comes at a time when the sport is grappling with an issue of too many talented young drivers and not enough seats available. The influx of rookies in the 2025 season has highlighted this problem, with many promising racers unable to secure a spot in Formula 1.
Graeme Lowdon, the team principal of Cadillac F1, has assured that any driver selection would be based on merit. The team's reserve driver for 2026, Colton Herta, an IndyCar driver, has been confirmed, but he will not compete in the IndyCar series next year. Reports suggest that Herta may compete in the F2 championship in 2026 to gain the necessary points for Formula 1.
The addition of Cadillac and two extra drivers could provide an opportunity to build a pipeline from the American racing scene to the European big leagues. The team's choice of Perez and Bottas, both former F1 drivers, is seen as a short-term marketing strategy rather than indicative of the team's future in the sport.
Perez, known for contributing to Latin America's growing fan base in Formula 1, and Bottas, with a reputation as F1's resident entertainer, have both had ample time to prove themselves in the sport. Perez, in particular, collected over a third of his total career points in 2023 alone.
The 2025 season saw a rare injection of youthful talent, following a dry spell without driver seat shakeups. Exciting moments were brought to the Dutch Grand Prix by Hadjar's podium and Kimi Antonelli's collision with Charles Leclerc. Formula 1 returned to the Netherlands after a lengthy summer break.
However, many talented young drivers who can't crack Formula 1 are pivoting to other series like Super Formula and IndyCar, or sports car racing, making those series more competitive and exciting to watch. The FIA's Super License system does not reward competitive non-FIA racing series like IndyCar equally compared to Formula 2 and Formula 3, which could potentially solve the sport's driver/seat supply and demand issue.
The Italian Grand Prix is one of the biggest weekends of the year in Formula 1. With the addition of Cadillac and experienced drivers like Perez and Bottas, the 2026 season is shaping up to be an exciting one.
