EU initiative SINFONICA enhancing transportation within Hamburg city
The city of Hamburg is taking significant strides in its mobility transition, as it joins the European Union's SINFONICA project. This ambitious project, running until 31st August 2025, aims to develop an intelligent traffic system for connected and automated driving, with a particular focus on mobility-restricted persons.
The SINFONICA project is expected to bring about a host of benefits, including increased traffic safety, reduced environmentally harmful emissions, and a decrease in traffic noise. The city's Senate Chancellery, the authority for traffic and mobility transition (BVM), and the Landesbetrieb Straßen, Brücken und Gewässer (LSBG) are among the participating parties from Hamburg.
To ensure the project caters to the needs of all its citizens, SINFONICA involves surveys, interviews, and focus groups with Hamburg's residents, companies in the industry, and local actors. Participation formats for Hamburg's citizens will be implemented from September 2023 and run until May 2024.
Hamburg will receive 200,000 euros from the EU for the SINFONICA project, with an additional 35 million euros earmarked for the development of digital and automated S-Bahns. The project also invests around 2 million euros specifically in the development of intelligent bus traffic.
One of the key objectives of the SINFONICA project is to ensure that a public transport offer can be reached within five minutes by 2030, supporting the Hamburg Takt initiative. The intelligent traffic system being developed is intended to support this ambitious goal.
For more information about the SINFONICA project, citizens can visit the official city of Hamburg website, hamburg.de. The project's innovative strategies are expected to play a crucial role in shaping Hamburg's mobility offerings as inclusively as possible, making the city a beacon of sustainable and accessible transportation in Europe.
