Mark your calendars! Essen/Mülheim Airport, a historical landmark that has been serving the cities of Essen and Mülheim since 1919, is celebrating its 100th birthday on September 7th, 2025.

The airport, which straddles both cities' territories, played a significant role in connecting the Rhine-Ruhr region with Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. The idea to establish the airport originated from the Essen Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1925, driven by the desire to create an airport for the Ruhr area's industry.

The celebration will take place from 12 PM to 5 PM and will feature a large family festival on the airport grounds. Children can enjoy interactive activities such as a carousel, miniature train, and bouncy castles. Mülheim carnivalists and the airport restaurant "Check-In" will provide free ice cream and live music to keep the festivities lively.

Visitors can also explore the airport's rich history. The first international flight connections at Essen/Mülheim Airport were established in 1930, and the airport's history can be explored at www.flughafen-essen-muelheim.de/fem/historie. The airship hangar will be open for visits, offering a glimpse into the past.

For those interested in aviation history, an oldtimer Cessna and the biplane "Inge" will be on display. The airport was initially used for emergency landings, with its grounds officially receiving airport rights as an approved emergency landing site on August 25, 1925.

To attend the event, public transportation is recommended. Paid parking is available at P10 of the Essen Trade Fair, with a free shuttle bus to the airport grounds. For more information, please contact the Press and Communications Office of our city portal at presse@our website or www.our website/presse.

The youth fire departments from Mülheim and Essen will also showcase their work, adding a touch of modern-day heroism to the celebration of the airport's storied past. Essen/Mülheim Airport is more than just a transportation hub; it's a piece of history that has shaped the cities it serves. Join us in celebrating this milestone on September 7th, 2025!
