The Main Customs Office Dresden has released its annual report for 2024, detailing a year of significant achievements in combating illegal activities and ensuring compliance with tax and customs regulations.
In a year marked by rigorous inspections and enforcement, the office collected a total of 2.5 billion euros in taxes and duties. This impressive figure underscores the office's crucial role in maintaining the financial health of the country.
One of the key areas of focus was the seizure of contraband goods. The customs service confiscated over 1.6 tons of drugs, protecting countless lives from the devastating effects of narcotics. Additionally, 2,400 specimens of protected animals and plants, along with products made from them, were intercepted during air freight inspections. Seized items included ivory, coral, butterflies, reptile leather, and live snakes, highlighting the office's commitment to preserving biodiversity.
The enforcement department also collected over 44 million euros in outstanding federal and social security agency claims. This significant sum underscores the office's effectiveness in collecting debts owed to the state.
Cases involving tax evasion, tax fraud, ban violations, and other crimes, such as narcotics, doping substances, firearms, and trademark law, were also a focus. Courts imposed fines totaling almost 1.1 million euros and penalties of 644,000 euros due to illegal work and illegal employment.
The Main Customs Office Dresden's efforts also extended to combating money laundering. However, the office did not provide details on the number of cases or the value of money laundering-related seizures in 2024.
The office's work did not go unnoticed, as public prosecutors' offices and courts imposed fines of 470,600 euros and prison sentences totaling 47 years through the Office for Criminal and Administrative Offenses.
